This 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle El Camino is a factory power-brake, power-steering model that has its original Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission. The original 283 CID 8-cylinder has been swapped out with a 350 CID from a ’76 Camaro LT and fitted with an Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold. The Rochester 4Jet, four-barrel carb and stock exhaust manifolds are original, but the exhaust system has been upgraded to dual exhaust and Turbo mufflers.
It is the seller’s first car, he has owned it for 44 years, after purchasing it in 1973 at age 16. (While in high school with money earned working in a Schwinn bike shop.)
The camper shell is a rare GemTop model that is attached with turnbuckles, so it’s easily removed and replaced.
The stock bucket seats have been replaced with ones with more headroom. The original shift console extends between the bucket seats, a feature of the Chevelle “SS” models. (Note that for 1964, upgraded El Caminos such as this one were not badged a SS models, even when fitted with all these SS sedan features.) A quick-shift Hurst shifter and t-handle shift knob have been added.
The vintage aftermarket aluminum wheels are in good condition and will shine up nicely. The centers have been painted body-color.
The differential is a stock 3:73 model, so it cruises easily at freeway speeds. (The “Muncie M21” 4-speed that came in this car from the factory has an aluminum case and is sometimes called a “rock crusher” model; the base model came with the heavier Saginaw transmission.) The custom-fabricated trailer hitch is rated Class 3, which is strong enough for heavy-duty towing.
It wears blue-and-yellow California plates and has been a California car since 1973, prior to that, it was in Nevada.
FYI and No-Surprises Notes:
The odometer reads 19,670, but hasn’t worked for years, but the speedometer and aftermarket tach work. It still has its original Delco AM radio, but it’s not hooked up. Non-stock items include a trio of aftermarket gauges and speakers in the door panels. There are numerous dents in the body panels and left door and there is some surface rust in a number of areas where the paint has chipped off (see the photos). There is rust bubbling around the custom flares in the rear wheel openings and some rust at the lower edge of the front windshield. The hood has some bubbling starting in the right front corner (see photos.) Body filler is evident in some photos as well. The floors and chassis are solid. It has power brakes with drums on all four corners and no visible leaks. The front suspension bushings are worn, including the upper and lower control arm bushings. The tires hold air but are old; the RF tire is new. The fuel pump and filter are new. The cooling system is gunky, the radiator hoses are getting old and the fan belts and thermostat should be replaced. Air shocks have been added to the rear; the twin filler connections are inside the cab, but one plastic air line in the cab is leaking air. (The rear end is sitting low in the photos because of the air-line leak and because there is a lot of heavy stuff stored inside the camper shell.) The turn signal switch in the steering column will need to be replaced. An extra instrument cluster/dash, a matching driver’s seat and a repair manual are included. The headliner will need to be replaced. The rear bumper has been swapped with a ’65 rear bumper, which incorporates backup lights in it. A front wheel stud is broken, but easily replaced. (The wheel locks have been removed, so the other wheels are also missing one lug nut.) The original jack, tire iron and spare-tire-attachment hardware (typically missing) are included.
The truck hasn’t been driven much for a number of years, but it has been started regularly and driven short distances from time to time. All in all, the prudent thing would be to trailer it or have it transported home, rather than drive it.
