This nice Mini pickup is updated to the modern look of the “Sport Pack” Mini sedans of the late ’90′s – with genuine Sport Pack wheel arches (ie: flares) and 13″ Sport Pack wheels. Tires are new. It’s a right-hand-drive model (RHD), as originally built, but all Minis have the holes and mountings to put the steering on either side!
Engine upgraded from the stock 850cc engine with a “3-synch” transmission to a later-model 1275cc engine with a four-synchro, four speed “rod shift” (ie: stronger, smoother shifting) transmission. Carb is a single SU, the 1 3/4″ model, fitted with a low-restriction, aftermarket K&N air cleaner. Has alloy rocker cover.
Its original drum brakes have been upgraded to later-type front discs, with 8.4″ vented rotors so the truck stops much better and requires less maintenance.
Exterior upgrades include Mk1 “moustache” grill and twin chrome side mirrors. Overriders (uprights) added to front bumper. Truck bed has a new canvas cover.
The interior is kit is near new. Seats are black with red piping and look like new. Has leather steering wheel from a later-model Mini. Locking steering column added as well. Speedo upgraded to pod with oil pressure and water temperature gauges (ie: the stock pickups had a speedo only, no gauges.)
Runs well, drives well.
The 1275cc engine runs very strong. Recently torn down to replace all seals and gaskets, and to check bottom end, internals and transmission. Everything appears in order, with a standard-grind crank, and a good clutch and pressure plate. Radiator in good shape; new water pump and fan belt. Oil pressure is good, alternator and charging system works as it should.
Paint looks decent, unless you get real close. Some might call it a “10-20-footer,” meaning it looks really awesome from that distance. Trucks are very hard to find – particularly ones that are completely rust-free; this one has quite a bit of rust on the underside.
It’s not show quality, but you’ll still get TONS of attention.
Better get used to all the smiles, thumbs-up, honks and waves – you’ll get a lot of them!
Basically, it’s a clean-looking, mechanically sound truck that runs strong, drives well. It’s an older British car, so it has typical minor glitches being sorted out. The electrics are good, with only minor issues that will be fixed shortly. Speedo is non-op, so it will need a further look-see. On the outside, as with most external-hinge, sliding-window doors, the left door hinges should be re-pinned with fresh bronze bushings, as the door has some up-and-down play in it. Heater isn’t hooked up; not sure if there’s any issues with the core or fan yet. The black rear license plate mount is scruffy and needs repaint.
Body appears very solid, with no externally visible rust. However, if you climb under the truck, there’s some cancer under the driver seat, in the floors and near the rear wheel openings where there is lots of body filler, areas that will need addressing at some point – unless you just don’t pick up the carpets for now! It’s said that all Minis have rust – it’s just a question of how much and where. This one has a bunch of rust – but it’s in far better shape than most of the pickups out there. Trucks were built to be work vehicles, they were used, often abused and typically left out in the weather. It’s always a wonder that any have survived, the Mini pickups are getting more and more rare…
Clear California title. It’s a ’64 model, so it’s smog exempt.
