This Mk1 Austin Mini is very rare - it's a genuine 970cc Cooper "S." We're told it's one of some 960 built for homologation purposes for eligibility for racing classes of the time. (This car's race history and documentation included).
BACKGROUND:
The 1275cc Cooper "S" - multiple winner of the Monte Carlo Rally - is widely known; it's also the model used in the original Italian Job movie. Some enthusiasts may have heard of the 1071 "S," but it seems only a handful are aware of the 970 "S." (Even we had to look it up!). While the factory did build the "997 Cooper" and "998 Cooper" models, the 970cc was the only one designated an "S" model! (Heritage Certificate documentation included too; original build date 13 August 1964).
FEATURES:
1964 Mini Cooper S shell in red with black roof (ie: its original factory paint scheme, per Heritage Certificate). Has all its correct "Austin Cooper S" badges, front and rear. Twin "S" fuel tanks; boot board as well. Wood & Pickett wheel arches, in body color. Fitted with 6"x10" Cosmic alloy wheels and 165/70 Yokohama A008 tires. Other exterior mods include quad driving lights on chrome light bar, alloy flip-top fuel filler capss, rear reversing light, chrome bullet mirrors.
Note: Original 970cc engine included, but currently fitted is 1275cc "A+" motor and rod-shift trans, (ie: which are generally stronger and more reliable). Other original parts included are the stock, original seats, steering wheel and a number of other items, along with steel wheels.
BRAKES AND SUSPENSION:
Brakes are Cooper S (7.5") discs in front, Minifin alloy drums in rear. Original hydrolastic (ie: "wet") suspension now converted to dry for less maintenance and improved handling.
UNDER THE BONNET:
Current engine is built to be quick, but strong, streetable and reliable as well. It's not noisy, but has a nice exhaust tone from its RC40 exhaust.
Transmission is now four-speed, four-synchro "rod shift" type fitted with a KAD quick-shift kit. In comparison, the original 970's 4-speed "remote" trans is a "3 synchro" type, meaning there's no synchro when downshifting to first, leading many folks to dub them "crunchboxes!" (Rod-shifts have synchros in all four gears, are generally stronger and smoother-shifting).
Cylinders bored to 1293cc; twin carbs are 1.5" SU's with K&N air filters on alloy intake. Fitted with 11-stud, "Stage 3" ported and polished, big-valve head; Kent 226 cam and AEG 584 cam followers. For greater strength and reliability, ARP stud kit, heat-treated crank, oversized dished pistons, resized con rods and upgraded nuts and bolts. For better performance, intake and exhaust manifolds ported to match upgraded head.
For improved cooling, a twin-core "Super Cool" radiator, high-flow water pump and Kevlar top and bottom coolant hoses.
IN THE CABIN:
Cobra Monaco race seats (original seats included) with RJS 5-point racing harness. Half rollcage. Grant GT steering wheel. Autometer tach. Wink multi-view mirror with half roll cage. For safety regulations, has full keyed electrical shut-off.
Zero rust, according to seller.
Runs well, drives well. Regularly street driven.
