1972 Austin Mini  

Mk3 Mini w/ 998cc ($6,500) [in Hayward, near Oakland, CA]

Runs great, drives great. Has the zippy 998cc engine w/ 4-speed, four-synchro transmission. Fully freeway-capable; cruises at 70-plus w/o even breathing hard!

CAUTION: This little Mini generates lots of smiles, thumbs-up and waves everywhere you go. If that's an issue for you, just stop reading right here!

Left-hand-drive (LHD) steering. Interior is vinyl and houndstooth-type cloth and is in decent shape. Has working rear window defogger.

Has front disc brakes. Unique 12" alloys from a special edition Mini; has decent Pirelli tires and two matching one also included. Has twin side mirrors and locking fuel cap.

It's a Mk3 model, so it has the doors with roll-up windows and internal door hinges.

Odometer reads just over 32,000 miles. (Current owner uncertain if that's original miles, but the rest of the mechanicals appear to be in good order, so it's possible that it's correct?) According to the owner, its title reads 1972 but it appears to have a number of features of a early '80's model. (ie: taillights w/ reverse light, 12" wheels, etc.). Body appears solid, but there are some areas of rust bubbles or blisters and some touchup and chips in the seam below the headlamps (see lots of closeup pics). The bonnet has a small crack in the underside lip and the wings (ie: fenders) appear to have been replaced at some point (see pics).

A unique upgrade is that a previous owner constructed a thin plywood "boot board" to protect contents from dirt and greas from contact with spare tire, battery and boot floor (ie: similar to what came in Coopers and Cooper S models, but not yet carpeted).

Recent work includes new water pump and fan, so it runs pretty cool. Headlamps and air filter are new. Local Mini specialist shop that did the work reports the car is in good mechanical condition and runs and drives very well. According to the mechanic, the car's only real issue is the areas of rust blisters in the paint). Feel free to contact us for how to reach the mechanic for his report.

Note: One thing that will need some fiddling is the main bonnet latch, as it sometimes doesn't catch. (for safety, It has a secondary latch that would typically hold the bonnet from flying up while driving!)

No air conditioning - but the windows roll up and down so you're fine there... <grin> The side rear windows also pop out for additional ventilation.

Current California registration and title. Owner reports it has been California titled for many years.
